Blyth Academy Scholarship

The Bhutan Canada Foundation, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, is pleased to announce that starting from September 2010, every year two high school scholarships will be offered to Bhutanese students. The scholarships will include two years’ tuition, home stay accommodation, and travel to and from Paro.

 

For this year the two scholarships will be offered at the Blyth Academy (Yorkville Campus), Toronto, Canada.

 

This year’s scholarships will be awarded to female students only. They should have passed Class X with a minimum of 80% being the aggregate of English and four other subjects. Blyth Academy

Blyth Academy provides a first-class education through the combination of small class sizes, dedicated and nurturing faculty, and a focused environment to guide the students to their maximum potential to achieve their post-secondary education goals.

 

The Academy offers a full range11 & 12 U-level courses in core subjects including Math, Sciences, Arts, Business, History, Languages, Physical Education and the Humanities according to the Ontario School curriculum. Unlike in Bhutan the Ontario school exam system is de-centralized and each high school sets its own exam.

 

The criteria are as follows:
Selection criteria:

  1. Students should have graduated from the 10th class with a minimum of 80% being the aggregate of English and four subjects.
  2. Students must be able to commit to two years in Canada starting September 2010.
  3. Students should provide recommendations from the school principals and/or teacher(s), and evidence of community and/or social service work and school leadership.
  4. Students must be interested in learning about and willing to adjust to new environments and cultures.
  5. Students must be willing to be an active part of the Canadian family.
  6. Two girls will be selected in the first year.
  7. Only the best 10 applicants will be shortlisted for an interview.

 

BCF Scholarship Commitment:

  1. The award will provide airfare from Paro return each year of the stay which means that the students will be able to spend their vacation in Bhutan after the end of their first year.
  2. They will be housed in home stays and provided three meals a day.
  3. They will receive a small allowance in addition to their room and board.
  4. The families will be carefully vetted and the students will have an advisor who will monitor their progress.
  5. The scholarships will be made each year so that there will be four students at Blyth Academy starting September 2011.

 

Students’ Obligations:

  1. Students will be responsible for obtaining the necessary visas.
  2. Students will have to be in good academic standing in order to renew for the second year. (They will need to pass all their courses.)
  3. Shortlisted students must bear all travel and living expenses to and from Thimphu for the selection interview.
